STEP 1 – DESIGNINGThe process of making jewelry is no less than magic! The entire design process involves many steps, such as designing, model making, and the final step of quality check.
Creating a design is the first step in the process of jewelry making. Designing is the stage where the jewelry designer develops an idea for a piece of jewelry and turns it into a reality by evaluating the concept and further analyzing it.
STEP 2 – CAD/CAMThe second stage, just after the design stage, is the CAD/CAM stage, which involves using CAD software. CAD Software is a 2D and 3D computer-aided software often used by designers to improve the design’s dimensional accuracy and quality. Also, it helps create a manufacturing database. When the jewelry designer completes the task of designing a concept the jewelry designer completes, the same is made on paper and developed in the system. This conversion of ‘concept on paper’ to the ‘system’ is done through CAD Software or computer-aided design technology. CAM or computer manufacturing software takes care of the machining and manufacturing process or automates the manufacturing process.
Step 3 – MODEL MAKINGThe Model-Making Stage is the next stage, which involves converting resin output from CAM to a silver model (a master design used to create similar pieces of jewelry using a rubber mold) through casting.
Step 4 – RUBBER MOULDThe 4th stage is the Rubber Mould stage, which is integral to the production process. The Rubber Mould helps create multiple pieces of the same designed jewelry. The best part of the rubber mold is that the designs remain safe, well protected, and embedded within it; thus, they can be used to create future replicas of the jewelry design. The materials involved in making mould can vary from natural rubber and silicone to metal, and the process of mould making is labelled ‘Vulcanizing’.
Step 5 – WAXING / WAX TREEThe next stage in the jewelry manufacturing process is the production of wax pieces. The wax pieces are produced from rubber molds made of the silver master. The waxing process involves placing the rubber mold on the commercial wax injector machine and then pressure injecting it into the cavity to create wax models. These wax models are being used for casting.
The wax pieces on a wax stem are soldered, a process called ‘treeing.’ In treeing, a spruce is attached to every wax piece, making an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the stem. The lighter items are placed at the top of the tree, while the heavier ones are placed at the bottom of the tree.
Step 6 – CASTINGMoving on to the next step, the jewelry manufacturing process at ShinySteel involves the casting stage, which is regarded as among the most complex processes. The method of casting requires experienced and skilled casters. The casting process consists of placing the wax tree in a steel flask and then placing a slurry of chemical powder, which takes around an hour to solidify. Afterward, the flask is placed in an electric furnace to heat. As a result, the wax melts and, thus, leaves a cavity of a tree. The resulting molten metal is poured into the flasks and cooled off. After, the molten metal is cooled and demolished, and the jewelry in casting is revealed.
Step 7 – GRINDINGShinySteel is the next stage in the jewelry manufacturing process. The grinding involves a polisher, which is used to grind off the nub (A nub results after the process of casting; once the raw casting is clipped off from the casting tree and appears at the place where the spruce was attached to the gold piece!). The polisher utilizes the motorized grinding machine to smoothen the surface of a gold piece of jewelry. The grinding involves the gandingan process of polishing, which is carried out by holding the jewelry piece against the spinning grinding wheel, thus resulting in a smooth surface as required.
Step 8 – FILING / ASSEMBLY AND PRE POLISHINGFiling is the next stage of the jewelry manufacturing process. Under Filing, excess metal or solder is removed from the piece. Various tools, like files and burns, remove the casting layer and offer a smooth finish. After Filing, assembly is carried out, joining two or more components of the same design using soldering or laser techniques.
Afterward, polishing is carried out to give a neat and fine finish and thus enhance the value of the jewelry piece. Three steps are involved in the polishing stage: tumbling, pre-polishing, and ultra-cleaning. You must note that before the diamond is set, those jewelry pieces bearing diamonds require pre-polishing since the diamond portions can’t be polished once the diamonds are set below the area, as it may risk the shine of the diamond.
Step 9 – POLISHINGThe polishing stage is the final stage, during which the jewelry is polished. The polishing ensures the jewelry shines better and is carried out after setting stones. The polishing can be carried out by both means, either manual or by machine. The tools that help the artisans polish the jewelry manually include soft buff, solid buff, hair buff, single line ball buff, coin buff, platinum polishing rouse, red and green rouse (to impart shine), black luster to remove casting or to fill layers, and white luster for the removal of roughness.
Step 10 – QUALITY CONTROLQuality control is the final stage in jewelry manufacturing, and it is equally important as the other stages. It ensures that the final product adheres to the defined quality guidelines and meets the standard requirements. It involves three methods: measurement, visual inspection, and mechanical inspection.
